I want to do reining with my mare. Should I put shoes and or sliding plates on her?

I am very interested in reining, but my horse is not registered (Quarter Horse/Arabian). Should I put shoes and or sliding plates on her or should I stick to not wasting the money?

You can learn to reign on any type of horse. The only time breeding and papers become important is when you compete in reigning shows specifically for a particular breed (AQHA, for example). But, to learn how, any horse with ability and desire to work with you is fine.

As for the horse being shod, check with your farrier for the area you will be riding in and type of footing. Shoes will help protect the feet, and most people who show use them, but for learning, check with your "hoof-man".

Sliders are flat bars that are shaped to fit the horse's back feet, so there is a smooth "plane" to allow their rear feet to "slide" (hence the name) in the dirt/sand for a longer distance. For learning, these are not needed. In fact, my 13 year old daughter has a QH mare she used for reining, and we shod her with sliders on the rear once. They did help, but if you are not doing the "fast and long" stops, no sense spending the money on having them made.

Summary of all this: Any horse can be used for reining, sliders only when you are ready to compete with the advice of your trainer and farrier, and regular shoes if you and your farrier feel you need them.
